Mosquito Dunk Study

styrofoam cups with netting across topThis was a short study to determine the effectiveness of the Mosquito Dunk, a commercially available larvicide, as a whole unit versus breaking the Dunk into smaller portions. Mosquito Dunks utilize the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis to control mosquito larvae. Barrels containing mosquito larvae were treated with whole Dunks, half Dunks and quarter Dunks. Larvae were added each week to determine how long a Mosquito Dunk or portion thereof would continue to provide control. The results showed that using a quarter (1/4) of the Dunk provided as much control as using a whole Dunk over a given period of time.
